The book of Lyubomir Mikov “Mosques in Sofia” was published

The album edition entitled “Mosques in Sofia” which has been published by Grand Mufti’s Office overviews the mosque that are preserved in the capital – “Byuyyuk Mosque”, ‘Chelebi Mosque”, “Banya Bashi Mosque”, “Gyul Mosque”, “Namazgyah” in Lozenets quarter and others.

According to the yearbook of Dunavski Vilyaet (Danubian District) for 1285 Hijri year (1868-1968) there were 44 mosques, several masjeds and 18 domes (türbe) in Sofia. The only functioning as a mosque building today is that of Kadi Seyfullah Efendi (“Banya Bashi” mosque). A great part of the other Ottoman buildings were demolished, and the others – adapted for other purposes.

In the recent research Prof. Mikov focused more specifically on the three preserved till nowadays mosques – “Byuyyub Mosque”, “Chelebi mosque”, “Banya Bashi mosque”, “Gyul Mosque”, “Namazgyah” in Lozenets quarter and others.

The edition contains a number of designs and an appendix with beautiful color and white-black illustrations and photos.

The book “Mosques in Sofia will be sold in the bookstores of Grand Mufti’s Office and the regional mufti’s offices in the country. Furthermore you can order the book edition also from “Publishing Department” of Grand Mufti’s Office.
