Opinion of Fatwa Committee: Can a Muslim woman travel without a mahram for work, excursion, etc?
Of a primary importance according to Islam is to guarantee the woman’s life, honor and dignity. That is why the Muslim woman can travel only when she is accompanied by a husband or by a mahram (father, grandfather, son, grandson, brother, nephew, uncle). This is clearly stated in the ahadith of Muhammad (pbuh). But in urgent situation (darurah) in which she has to travel without a mahram, according to some scholars it is permitted to do this together with a group of women, provided that there is sure for the life, the health and her honor.
