Representatives of the Muslim Denomination attended a commemorative event of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in our country
The Chairman of the Supreme Muslim Council Vedat Ahmed and the Secretary General of Grand Mufti’s Office Dzhelal Faik were among the official guests of the commemorative event “Black January” organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in our country on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the tragic events in Baku. The commemorative program took place on January 17 (Friday) this year in the Central Military Club at 7 Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. in the capital and included official speeches, documentary film screening and performances of classical piano music compositions by the pianist Ani Lincheva.
On January 20, 1990 the Soviet Army invaded in the Azerbaijani capital Baku after the illegal decision of the former leadership of the USSR aiming to stop the national struggle of the Azerbaijani people. Hundreds are the people who on this date 30 years ago paid with the cost of their own life for their quest to independence from the Soviet Empire after 70 years of subjugation.
During the night of January 19 and 20, 1990, 137 civilian people were killed, 744 were injured and 841 were illegally arrested after the invasion of the Soviet army in Baku. This tragedy which befell thousands of people and their families, was later called “Black January” and remains forever in the world history.
